Updated VMware Horizon View Visio Shapes Stencil

It's been about 9 months since I published my own set of Visio shapes for VMware vSphere and Horizon View.  The VMware Visio stencils have been quite popular, with the pages that host them seeing more than 37,000 page views since I first published them.  I've since updated both stencils with new shapes and diagrams as I've worked on different projects at Clearpath.  Most of the changes are in the Horizon View Visio Stencil, with new shapes and diagrams.  I included some hand-drawn shapes for Horizon View for some fun whiteboard like diagrams that I'll be using in some posts very soon - the … [Read more...]

VMware View Visio Stencil Download

Update 5/20/2013: This stencil has been updated.  Head to my VMware Visio Stencils and Shapes permalink page for the latest version. Yesterday I posted a Visio stencil with some generic VMware icons.  I also have put together a Visio stencil for use in diagraming VMware View virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) environments.  Some of the icons are borrowed from other collections (see links in my earlier post), and some are unique shapes that I made for this View specific set.  This View set has 184 shapes as of today.  These shapes provide visuals for all aspects of a View environment, from … [Read more...]

New VMware Icons Visio Stencil Download

Update - 5/20/2013: Head to my VMware Visio Stencils and Shapes permalink page for the latest versions of this stencil, and my VMware Horizon View specific shapes. I've been working on some Visio diagrams for some VMware projects I am architecting.  I wanted to use some icons to identify VM's and vCenter actions in my diagrams and found there were no good Visio stencils, shapes or templates for it so I made my own.  They're not the greatest quality, but will do for now.  Here's what the new pack looks like: And here's where you can download them: VMtoday-VMware-Icons. Update: … [Read more...]

Home Lab ESXi Install Problem on HP xw8600 with LSI1068

I recently finished a big basement remodel project (gutted it and started from scratch!), leaving me with a new, bigger office space.   The Townsend Family Director of Standards and Practices (a.k.a. She Who Must Be Obeyed, a.k.a. my wife) thinks she's got a nice new space to do some work in, but I've got better plans! My VMware Home Lab reborn!  I started the rebuild tonight with a pair of HP xw8600 workstations.  They are a nice system for a home lab - dual-socket CPU (Intel Xeon 5400 quad-core series), up to 128GB RAM, 14 channels of on-board LSI 1068 SATA/SAS RAID Controller, PCIe x16, … [Read more...]

Amazon Kindle DX Price Cut – Great for VMware Technical Document Reading!

I just saw that the Amazon Kindle DX 9.7" eReader (Kindle DX, Free 3G, 9.7" E Ink Display, 3G Works Globally) got a pretty deep price cut, down to $269.  The eReader doesn't have the full-blown color screen or Android experience of the Kindle Fire, but I've found that it is awesome for reading technical documentation.  The large, no glare, black & white screen is distraction free, helping me to focus on the (let's be honest, sometimes boring) technical documentation and publications I'm reading.  I carry my DX in my backpack, loaded with technical books, formal documentation, and the … [Read more...]

VMware Press Releases “Managing and Optimizing VMware vSphere Deployments” For Pre-Order

VMware Press has released Managing and Optimizing VMware vSphere Deployments by Sean Crookston & Harley Stagner for pre-order on Amazon.  The book is billed as "The Complete Guide to Planning, Deploying, and Operating  High-Performance VMware vSphere 5 Virtual Infrastructure."  The description of the book on Amazon (copied below) sounds like this title will be well worth the price ($15 on the Kindle, $25 for the paperback). To make the most of VMware’s vSphere 5, IT professionals need knowledge, tips, and insights they’ll  never find in the manuals–or in any book, until now! In Managing … [Read more...]

Using KMS for VMware View Windows Activation

When deploying or recomposing a pool of Windows 7 (or Windows Vista) virtual desktops on VMware View, you may receive an error message stating: “composer agent initialization error (16): Failed to activate software license (waited 0 seconds).”  This error occurs when you use a Multiple Activation Key (MAK) to activate the parent VM.  View Composer QuickPrep, by default, uses Microsoft Key Management Services (KMS).  VMware KB Article 1026556 provides workarounds for activating MAK clients, or bypassing activation by QuickPrep so you can use a trial key.  The workarounds are appropriate for … [Read more...]

vSphere 5 Books & Training Resources

I've been asked several times recently to recommend training resources for VMware, so I thought I might write my responses up in a blog post to help out folks in the community who are looking for the best resources to gain VMware knowledge, prepare for their VCP and other certifications, and continue on their journey to becoming a virtualization rockstar. I've picked up a bunch of certifications over the past 10 years.  For me, certification is not the means to an end, but the end of some long, intensive studying and lab work, then doing some deep dive studying and doing.  By the time I get … [Read more...]
