Horizon View & Horizon Suite: Per Concurrent or Per Named User Licensing?

A few points of clarification after the good Twitter discussion I just had with Dan Fallon, Jim Millard, and Matt Davis in response to my posting of the new VMware Horizon View and VMware Horizon Workspace / Suite licensing.  In the details on licensing for the new products (full details are on the Clearpath blog), I mentioned that Horizon View licensing changes to per named user from the previous per concurrent user licensing when you upgrade to the new Horizon Suite (a combination of Horizon View, Horizon Mirage, and Horizon Workspace) from View Premier bundle licensing.  A few things to … [Read more...]

Learn VMware ThinApp with New ThinApp Essentials Book

ThinApp is an essential piece of VMware's end user computing portfolio as it acts as the decoupling agent between legacy Windows applications and the underlying operating system.  Leveraging ThinApp allows administrators to overcome application compatibility issues while providing new application deployment options to both physical desktops as well as VMware View desktops.  ThinApp does this by virtualizing everything that makes a Windows app a Windows app - registry entries, DLL registrations, Program Files directories, and user personalization - into a single .exe or .msi file.  The ThinApp … [Read more...]

Reading the Tea Leaves before VMworld 2012 – Part 2

In Part 1 of ‘Reading the Tea Leaves Before VMworld,’ I looked at some recent VMware acquisitions to make some predictions on what might be announced this week at VMworld.  In part 2, I’ll work through the VMworld Content Catalog and a few other sources to guess at what product specific features and upgrades we might expect.  So, without further ado, here’s What to Expect when you are vExpecting. vSphere 5.1 It’s no secret that an updated version of the flagship vSphere product will be announced this week.  If history repeats itself, the version announced this week will pick up version … [Read more...]

Reading the Tea Leaves Before VMworld 2012 – Part 1

This year’s VMworld conference in San Francisco is shaping up to be a great one.  VMware is gearing up for quite a conference this week – I’ve heard from several VMware insiders, saying this show will be “jaw-dropping,” “mind-blowing,” and “amazing.”  But, VMware is keeping the product announcements, acquisitions, and cool new technology very close to the vest this year, so the exact details are not yet known.  I thought I might engage in some predictive analytics against recent VMware press releases, VMworld session builder details, and some buzz in the community/press to guess at what might … [Read more...]

Starting your Journey Towards The Cloud: Why VMware’s End User Computing Solutions Make Sense

Since joining Clearpath Solutions Group I have had many opportunities to present at company events, as well as at VMware User Group events and VMware Knowledge Series events.  I'm pretty serious about my introverted nature (I highly recommend the book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking for anyone figuring out how navigate your own introversion in your professional or personal lives).  I've been very pleasantly surprised at my comfort and enjoyment in presenting in front of large groups, and interacting with the audience.  I've found that when I share my passion … [Read more...]

Clearpath & VMware View Lunch & Learn Presentation

I recently presented at a couple of Clearpath Solutions Group Lunch & Learn style events that focused on VMware View and touched on many of the components of VMware's growing End User Computing portfolio.  The presentation walked attendees through the concept of VDI, why it matters, and how IT groups can leverage desktop virtualization to transform from an or organization servicing devices (legacy desktops) to an organization that delivers services (apps & data) to users. A few key points that I wanted to call out from the presentation are: Cloud is both a journey & a … [Read more...]
