I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – it’s awesome working for an awesome company that supports the greater EMC, VMware and Cisco communities. The inaugural class of EMC Elect are finding the custom shirts that Clearpath had made for them at EMC World. The shirts are just one of our ways of saying thanks to the EMC Elect for their contributions to the EMC community. If you are one of the EMC Elect, make sure you stop by the Bloggers area at EMC World to pick up your custom shirt!

Announcing EMC Elect
EMC announced today a new community recognition program called EMC Elect. Much like the VMware vExpert program or the Microsoft MVP program, EMC Elect provides individuals recognition for their contributions to the EMC community. Programs like this are incredibly beneficial – for the honoree as well as for the sponsoring company and the wider technology community. I’ve certainly benefited from being selected as a VMware vExpert, and I hope that VMware has benefited from my feedback as a result of my participation in the vExpert program. More importantly, the positive feedback from the vExpert program has encouraged me to contribute more as a VMUG leader, blogger, consultant and advocate – and I hope above all that my contributions benefit the community. With this in mind, I’m pleased to announce that I’ve been honored as a Founder in the EMC Elect program.
The ten founding EMC Elect honorees represent community members from customers, partners, community advocates and EMC specialists. The founders are charged with jumpstarting the program, beginning with a community-driven, peer-nomination program to onboard the freshman class of the Elect. Those honored by being selected for participation in EMC Elect will represent the EMC community at large. While many of the Elect will be storage rockstars, others (like me) will represent the partner, customer, and greater community of storage, virtualization, and security professionals – but we’ll all share the same goal of sharing knowledge, improving our craft, and driving the mutual success of the community.
Those selected to be an EMC Elect will earn a few great benefits:
- Public recognition and status (and the responsibility that comes with being a leader)
- Exclusive content and opportunities (think beta’s, briefings, a VMAX for the living room)
- Privileged access and private communication channels (ability to shape and influence the products and community we all know and love)
There are pockets of top influencers hidden all throughout the EMC community – internally and externally; folks who really believe in driving excellence in what they do and sharing what they know with the community. This is your opportunity to recognize these contributors by filling out a nomination form (don’t be shy about self-nomination either). Nominate those employees, customers, and partners who you feel contribute significantly to the overall EMC community. Nominations are open through December 15th. I hope you’ll join us!

DC vBeers – May 23, 2012
Join your fellow virtualization professionals for an independent networking event. vBeers is designed to be a vendor agnostic, independent event that allows IT pros to get together, network and talk without the influence of the vendors we all get pushed. With a few of the local gurus just returning from Citrix Synergy and some great new releases from VMware and Microsoft there will be plenty to talk about.
Location: RFD Chinatown
Address: 810 7th St NW, Washington, DC
Date: May 23, 2012
Time: 5-8 PM
Visit the vBeers website to register for the event (It’s free, just need to get a count of who is coming!) — Link here: https://www.vbeers.org/2012/04/23/vbeers-dc-23-may-2012/
VMware Raising the Bar! Event Tomorrow
This is your last chance to register for tomorrow’s (July 12, 2011) big VMware online event, “Raising the Bar, Part V”. During the event, VMware CEO Paul Maritz and CTO Steve Herrod will announce the next generation of VMware cloud infrastructure offerings. The event will be broadcasted live beginning at 9:00 AM PDT
The agenda looks like this:
- 9:00-9:45 Maritz and Herrod present
- 10:00-12:00 Deep dive breakout sessions
- 10:00-12:00 Live Q&A with VMwarevExperts
While I don’t have any inside knowledge on the event, I expect new product and service offerings, along with details on recent acquisition announcements on how VMware is bringing to bear its vision for a seamless cloud infrastructure – public, private, hybrid – that is simple to manage, easy to scale, and with all the dynamism that one could imagine. And if that weren’t enough, one lucky attendee for this online event will win a ticket to VMworld 2011. This event promises to be a great intro to what is shaping up to be a great VMworld 2011 in Las Vegas!
VMtoday’s One Year Anniversary
Today marks the one year anniversary of my first post on VMtoday.com, and an exciting year it has been in many ways. First, some stats:
- VMtoday.com has been visited more than 10,000 times in the past year. While the number of site visits is far below some of my fellow virtualization bloggers, it is still exciting for me to see that I am making an impact on the community (despite my meager post count). There are some of you who read my posts through Planet V12n and RSS, which is cool by me.
- Yesterday was the busiest day for the site. No coincidence that it comes after adding some new content…. I’ll try to be more faithful in publishing regular, relevant content!
- My most popular post to date has been: IBM DS3300 iSCSI Write Performance Solved. I’m glad this has been useful for so many, but I hope that you don’t just apply the workarounds I wrote about. I would rather have you build a “bet the business” iSCSI environment by adding that second controller to your MD3000i or DS3300.
- My least popular post to date has been: VMworld Here I Come. I will try not to be so boring in the future.
- The first link back to my site was from Scott Lowe’s blog. Thanks for the link, Scott. Scott wrote a darn fine book: Mastering VMware vSphere 4. Buy it.
- The site theme, like my Twitter page, is very blue. I am working on a new theme in all of the spare time that a busy professional and father of two boys can muster.
Along with this site, I have made a concerted effort engage the virtualization community in several ways:
- Twitter keeps me plugged in to the latest news and discussions, and has been a source of help to me (and I would like to think that I have helped some of you as well). Follow me at https://twitter.com/joshuatownsend.
- I have stepped up into a leadership role with the Washington DC VMware User Group (VMUG). It has been awesome to meet with and learn from my local colleagues. I will continue to work with the DC VMUG leadership team to deliver exciting and relevant content and activities (and also some more seating space). I welcome your feedback and ideas for ways to improve the VMUG.
- VMworld 2009 was a great way to meet many of you while learning some of the hottest new technology on the planet. My wife came along and enjoyed spending time with some of the other vSpouses (or vWidows?).
- I took a new job early in the year with a VMware Partner in the DC area. This new job has been both challenging and rewarding, affording me opportunities to more effectively engage customers and spend more time working on virtualization-specific solutions.
I look forward to contributing to the virtualization community as a blogger, VMUG leader, and practitioner. If you want to learn a bit more about me, check out the About page on this site. I welcome your feedback and appreciate your reading my work!
