vShield Endpoint with vSphere 6.0

I've heard some questions regarding vShield Endpoint being supported with vSphere 6.0.  Some of the confusion has come from various announcements of End of Availability and End of Support for vCloud Networking and Security.  Before I answer the question of using vShield Endpoint with vSphere 6.0, let's first look at the history of the vShield product line to see where the confusion may come from.  There has been many changes due to the rapid pace of innovation and developments in virtual networking and security: May 2009: vShield Zones 1.0 released, providing an application-aware … [Read more...]

vCenter Virtual Appliance Network Settings Reverting

In one of my lab environments my vCenter Server Appliance (VCVA VCSA*) kept reverting its DNS server settings after I changed them in the VCSA web interface (https://:5480).  After changing the Preferred DNS Server and Alternate DNS Server settings to use my Active Directory Domain Controller IPs and then rebooting the appliance, the DNS settings were removed and the Preferred DNS Server setting was reverted to the setting present before I updated it. Losing my DNS Server settings caused me all sorts of issues - my vCenter Server couldn't find ESXi hosts by name, AD authentication failed, … [Read more...]

PowerCLI Script to Set DNS and NTP on ESXi Hosts

Since joining VMware, I've built, rebuilt and updated several lab environments (home lab and work labs).  One of the problems I keep running into is incorrect/missing/disabled NTP on my ESXi hosts.  Because lab gear is often abused well-loved, BIOS time is not always correct (long periods of being powered off), settings are all sorts of jacked up (it's a lab, we're engineers, let's break stuff!!!), and documentation is non-existent.  The problem is not just in a lab environment - the number of customer environments I've seen that aren't set to use NTP is much higher than I would have thought … [Read more...]

64TB VMDKs? Yes we can.

Here’s a tasty tidbit for you – in the just announced vSphere 5.5, we can now create 64TB VMDK files.  While much of vSphere 5.5 offers a 2x increase in configuration maximums over vSphere 5.1, the increase in VMDK size is a whopping 32x.  (It may actually be a bit less – I’m not sure if the -512B caveat comes into play on the virtual disk size for vSphere 5.5.  I didn’t think to test this out in the lab during my beta testing… the max size is actually 62.9TB as space is reserved in the containing VMFS for snapshots, metadata, etc.). Now just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.  I … [Read more...]

PCoIP Packet Loss? Don’t Blame the Network!

Several months ago I was called into a new customer to diagnose some odd behavior in their VMware View environment. The organization was struggling with constant disconnects and generally poor performance on their View desktops. When users weren’t being randomly disconnected from their desktops, the users experienced lag when dragging windows between multiple monitors, ‘choppy’ graphics/video, and slow application launching. The problems occurred with local and remote users (both WAN and LAN could be involved).  The customer had done some troubleshooting, worked with VMware Support and the … [Read more...]

Multipathing Support in vSphere Standard Edition

A customer recently asked me if storage multipathing is supported in vSphere Standard Edition.  The customer had reviewed the vSphere Editions comparison chart at https://www.vmware.com/products/datacenter-virtualization/vsphere/compare-editions.html and saw that Standard Edition did not include the 'Storage APIs for Array Integration, Multipathing' feature.  While the answer was quick and easy, I saw a good chance to provide some detailed information to the customer to better equip them to make an informed purchasing decision and to run their vSphere environment in the long run.  So what is … [Read more...]

Updated VMware Horizon View Visio Shapes Stencil

It's been about 9 months since I published my own set of Visio shapes for VMware vSphere and Horizon View.  The VMware Visio stencils have been quite popular, with the pages that host them seeing more than 37,000 page views since I first published them.  I've since updated both stencils with new shapes and diagrams as I've worked on different projects at Clearpath.  Most of the changes are in the Horizon View Visio Stencil, with new shapes and diagrams.  I included some hand-drawn shapes for Horizon View for some fun whiteboard like diagrams that I'll be using in some posts very soon - the … [Read more...]

VMware Product Updates – April 2013

VMware has released updates to several products over the past couple weeks.  Many of the updates take the version 5.1 products announced at VMworld 2012 to Update 1 (i.e. the first major service pack).  The updates, spanning vSphere (ESXi and vCenter), vCloud Director, vCenter Operations, vCenter Orchestrator, vCenter Site Recovery Manager (SRM), vSphere Data Protection, and the vSphere Storage Appliance, include bug fixes, security fixes, and functionality changes.  Here’s what you need to know about the updates, including a few upgrade bugs that you need to know about before you pull the … [Read more...]
