It’s been about 9 months since I published my own set of Visio shapes for VMware vSphere and Horizon View. The VMware Visio stencils have been quite popular, with the pages that host them seeing more than 37,000 page views since I first published them. I’ve since updated both stencils with new shapes and diagrams as I’ve worked on different projects at Clearpath. Most of the changes are in the Horizon View Visio Stencil, with new shapes and diagrams. I included some hand-drawn shapes for Horizon View for some fun whiteboard like diagrams that I’ll be using in some posts very soon – the image to the left is a quick peek at what the hand drawn ones look like. I also added shapes for Persona Management and ThinApp repositories, a Transfer Server shape, and a few client access device shapes.
Both updated stencils are linked below for download in Visio 2013 .vssx format:
And by request, here are the same stencils in Visio 2003-2010 .vss format:
- VMtoday VMware Horizon View Visio Stencil (2003-2010 .vss format)
- VMtoday VMware vSphere Icons Visio Stencil (2003-2010 .vss format)
If you need another format, leave a comment below and I’ll see what I can do.
If you want to link to these, link to my permalink page for VMware Visio Stensils so folks see the latest and greatest version.

I have downloaded the files, but they are not in teh vsx format like I would expect. They come down as zip files and once unzipped, there is no vsx file within. Can you please instruct me how to get these into Visio? Thanks for sharing!
Joshua Townsend says
Thanks for letting me know, Ron. The downloads work fine in Firefox or Chrome, but it seems that IE is changing the file extension. If you download with IE, simply change the file extension from .zip to .vssx (Visio 2013 format) and the stencil will work.

Could you post these in Visio 2010 format please?
Joshua Townsend says
Just posted them in Visio 2003-2010 .vss format, Dave.

Thanks. But the files are .vsd not .vss
Joshua Townsend says
The files are being served as .vss. I’m guessing you are using Internet Explorer. For some reason, IE is rewriting the file extension from .vss to .vsd when you go to save it. Firefox and Chrome both work correctly to save as .vss. Try an alternate browser, or change the extension of the .vsd you saved to .vss.

Ahh the wonders of IE. Changing the extension worked. They look great. Thanks.

Have the downloads been removed? I can’t seem to get them in IE,FF,Chrome.
cheers!

Sorry Nick – I migrated my WordPress site last night and it broke a few things. The downloads should be fixed now. Let me know if you can’t get to them and I can email or FTP or some other archaic form of file transfer to you.

Hi,
I downloaded the VMtoday-VMware-View-Visio-Stencil.vss for Visio 2003-10. When I tried to open in Visio 2007 an error came up “visio internal error: #2131 Action 1002:Open. First try closing and reopening the file. Next try restarting Visio.
The other download (VMtoday-VMware-Icons.vss) was no problem at all. But I needed the View Visio stencil.

These are some great stencils. Thanks for putting them together! The one question I have is how to edit the text on some of the shapes, like the ESXi shapes that say TEXT or Formatted Text on them. Thoughts?
Josh Townsend says
Some of the text is part of the image itself, not an actual Visio text box, so you won’t be able to edit it.

Cool. Thanks for the info.
