64TB VMDKs? Yes we can.

Here’s a tasty tidbit for you – in the just announced vSphere 5.5, we can now create 64TB VMDK files.  While much of vSphere 5.5 offers a 2x increase in configuration maximums over vSphere 5.1, the increase in VMDK size is a whopping 32x.  (It may actually be a bit less – I’m not sure if the -512B caveat comes into play on the virtual disk size for vSphere 5.5.  I didn’t think to test this out in the lab during my beta testing… the max size is actually 62.9TB as space is reserved in the containing VMFS for snapshots, metadata, etc.). Now just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.  I … [Read more...]

Going Nostradamus Style on VMworld 2013

It's hard to believe that VMworld 2013 is upon us.  Before last year's show I wrote a couple posts on my predictions for VMworld 2012 (here and here).  A good number of my predictions were correct on new products, services, and overall direction for VMware.  Emboldened by my future telling success, I thought I would try to do the same this year.  So without further ado, here's what I see coming at VMworld 2013, based on the VMworld 2013 Content Catalog, earlier announcements, rumors, social media hints, and pure conjecture. A Narrowed Focus First prediction: we'll see a narrowing of focus … [Read more...]

VMware Product Updates – April 2013

VMware has released updates to several products over the past couple weeks.  Many of the updates take the version 5.1 products announced at VMworld 2012 to Update 1 (i.e. the first major service pack).  The updates, spanning vSphere (ESXi and vCenter), vCloud Director, vCenter Operations, vCenter Orchestrator, vCenter Site Recovery Manager (SRM), vSphere Data Protection, and the vSphere Storage Appliance, include bug fixes, security fixes, and functionality changes.  Here’s what you need to know about the updates, including a few upgrade bugs that you need to know about before you pull the … [Read more...]

VMware Horizon General Availability – Licensing and Promotions!

VMware Horizon Suite and all of the components that make up the suite were made Generally Available (GA) on Monday (March 4, 2013).  VMware Horizon View 5.2, VMware Horizon Mirage 4.0, and VMware Horizon Workspace 1.0 versions are available as stand-alone products or all bundled into the Horizon Suite.  This is an exciting set of releases from VMware.  I wrote a summary of the releases last week if you don't yet know what is included in the upgrades and new products. With GA came information on pricing and licensing for individual products and for the Horizon Suite, which includes all of … [Read more...]

VMware End-User Computing Announcements

VMware announced this week the launch of several new products in the growing portfolio of End-User Computing (EUC) solutions, under the VMware Horizon family of products. The expansion of EUC products across the industry is being fueled by increasing demands for IT solutions for business users to be delivered ‘as-a-service’, as well as by the growing trend of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). The ability of technology departments to deliver applications, user data, and desktop as a service, while maintaining user mobility and freedom must be balanced against the need to standardize and secure … [Read more...]

Learn VMware ThinApp with New ThinApp Essentials Book

ThinApp is an essential piece of VMware's end user computing portfolio as it acts as the decoupling agent between legacy Windows applications and the underlying operating system.  Leveraging ThinApp allows administrators to overcome application compatibility issues while providing new application deployment options to both physical desktops as well as VMware View desktops.  ThinApp does this by virtualizing everything that makes a Windows app a Windows app - registry entries, DLL registrations, Program Files directories, and user personalization - into a single .exe or .msi file.  The ThinApp … [Read more...]

PSA: Less Than 1 Month Until Free VMware vCloud Suite Offer Expires

A friendly public service announcement: VMware announced at VMworld 2012 in San Francisco that any customer with vSphere Enterprise Plus licensing under a current Support & Subscription (SnS) agreement as of August 27th would receive a free upgrade to the new vCloud Suite Standard Edition.  The free upgrade offer is only available through December 15, 2012.  The vCloud Suite Standard Edition includes vSphere Enterprise Plus, VMware vCloud Director, vCloud Connector and vCloud Networking & Security Standard (formerly known as vShield Edge and vShield App).  There's some other great … [Read more...]

VMware View 5.1.x Now Compatible with vSphere 5.1!

I wrote an article a couple of weeks ago about the incompatibility of VMware View 5.1 and vSphere 5.1, but mentioned a forthcoming patch based on an update to VMware knowledge base article 2035268 (http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2035268) that I saw through a RSS subscription to the article.  Good news as of last night - that patch is now available for download, making vSphere 5.1 compatible with View 5.1.  I am a bit surprised that the patch, ESXi510-201210401-BG, applies to ESXi 5.1 instead of View 5.1.  I would expect that the older View 5.1 (released in May 2012) would need to be patched to work … [Read more...]
