VMware View 5.1.x Now Compatible with vSphere 5.1!

I wrote an article a couple of weeks ago about the incompatibility of VMware View 5.1 and vSphere 5.1, but mentioned a forthcoming patch based on an update to VMware knowledge base article 2035268 (http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2035268) that I saw through a RSS subscription to the article.  Good news as of last night - that patch is now available for download, making vSphere 5.1 compatible with View 5.1.  I am a bit surprised that the patch, ESXi510-201210401-BG, applies to ESXi 5.1 instead of View 5.1.  I would expect that the older View 5.1 (released in May 2012) would need to be patched to work … [Read more...]

VMware Press Review Team

I follow VMware Press on Facebook.  Their status update post this morning caught my attention.  VMware Press is starting the 'VMware Press Product Review Team' - a group of qualified book reviewers who will read and publish reviews of VMware Press titles (blogs, Amazon, BN.com).  Reviewers will be given up to three free eBooks from VMware Press in exchange for an honest review of the book.  The first book for review will be the forthcoming VMware View 5: Building a Successful Virtual Desktop by Paul O'Doherty. While there has been some noise lately around the number of paid reviews on sites … [Read more...]

Update: 10/26/2012 - a patch has been released to correct compatibility between View 5.1 and vSphere ESXi 5.1.  See here for more: http://vmtoday.com/2012/10/vmware-view-5-1-x-now-compatible-with-vsphere-5-1/ VMware released vSphere 5.1 shortly after VMworld 2012.  The new release of vSphere includes features that will be of great benefit to VMware View virtual desktop infrastructures such as the new Space Efficient virtual disk (.vmdk) format and a new virtual machine format (hardware version 9) that enhances virtual shared graphics acceleration.  However, the current version of VMware … [Read more...]

Microsoft KB2661254 and VMware

Microsoft today is pushing an update to Windows via Windows Updates that increases the bit length requirements for RSA certificates.  With this update, Microsoft is requiring RSA certificates to have a key length of 1024 bits.  Some applications do not yet use a 1024 or greater key length and could be impacted by this updated.  Some examples: Internal Microsoft Certificate Authority servers that were built with a less than 1024 key will not start after the update – this will make certification validation for internally generated certs fail (could impact Outlook Web Access, vCenter … [Read more...]
